Whether a quiet dinner for two or large family gathering, our staff is dedicated to creating a personalized experience served in a warm, yet inviting environment. From kitchen to table, our holistic approach to the dining experience compels us to be uncompromising in the quality of our product.

Terrapin’s Dining Room is our more formal dining space, open for dinner 7 nights a week. Our dinner menus feature larger entrée portions made with local & organic ingredients whenever possible, and all meat & dairy products are hormone & antibiotic free.

Originally Rhinebeck’s First Baptist Church, built in 1825, the inviting space offers a unique Hudson Valley dining experience under cathedral ceilings with soaring windows offering views of the village of Rhinebeck. Dressy casual attire is suggested and reservations are recommended.

Red Bistro & Bar is Terrapin’s more casual and playful dining option. Red Bistro is a favorite among Rhinebeck’s locals and families. Our menu features something for everyone, including a build-your-own sandwich board, our award-winning Hudson Valley Cattle Company burger, nachos and quesadillas, seasonal salads and soups, a healthy menu and more substantial entrees.

Our full bar offers a large selection of both New York State craft beer and imported beer, creative seasonal cocktails and virgin specialty drinks and an award-winning wine list. Attire is casual and reservations are not accepted – just stop by!

Chef Josh Kroner has been a driving force behind the farm-to-table movement in the Hudson Valley since he opened Terrapin Restaurant in 1998. As executive Chef and Owner of Terrapin, he continues to delight diners with his unique style of New American cooking, blending a classical French approach with the influences of Asia, Italy, and the American Southwest.

Working closely with local farmers and growers, Chef Kroner updates his menus seasonally and incorporates local, organic ingredients whenever possible. He currently serves as a board member for Hudson Valley Restaurant Week and was awarded the 2014 Victoria A. Simons Locavore Award.

Chef Kroner’s strong connection to food and a childhood spent in and around the restaurant industry ultimately shaped his career. After earning a Bachelor of Science in Architectural Engineering from the University of Colorado in Boulder and a brief period working in this field, Chef Kroner came to the realization that he had a true calling, and it was in the business of food. He then attended the French Culinary Institute in Manhattan, New York, where he later became an instructor. He has also worked under the tutelage of such notable chefs as Emeril Lagasse at the Food Network and Bobby Flay at Manhattan’s famed Mesa Grill.

In June of 2003, after several successful years in its original West Hurley location, Terrapin restaurant moved to its current location in historic Rhinebeck, New York, and is now housed in Rhinebeck’s beautifully renovated “First Baptist Church,” built in 1825. The restaurant provides guests with a dramatic atmosphere and uniquely inviting ambiance, making a truly memorable dining experience.

Over the past twenty years, Terrapin’s success, both commercial and critical has continued to grow. The restaurant has earned numerous awards including “Best Restaurant” in the Hudson Valley by Chronogram Magazine, “Best Farm-to-Table Restaurant of the Hudson Valley” and “Best Bistro of the Hudson Valley” by Hudson Valley Magazine’s reader poll, and the Wine Spectator’s Award of Excellence. Terrapin has also earned a Zagat rating of 27 for food and 26 for service.
