Heritage Trail

The Heritage Trail is a 19.5 mile linear trail from Middletown to Harriman, New York. It is the first multi-use asphalt trail developed in the parks system. This trail offers attractive scenic vistas and access from the Goshen to Harriman for walking, biking and rollerblading.

Access Points & Parking: Ryerson Rd, New Hampton; Hartley Rd, Goshen; St. James Place, Village of Goshen; Chester Depot Museum, Chester; Airplane Park, Monroe; Park and Ride Lot B, Village of Monroe; River Rd, Harriman.

Parking area is open from dawn to dusk.

The Heritage Trail is a 10-foot wide trail on the right-of-way of the former Erie Railroad.

The trail features sections of both asphalt and limestone surface. The current 19.5 mile trail winds through a bird/wildlife sanctuary, historic landmarks, murmuring streams, rolling meadows and friendly communities.

Trail users may enjoy biking, walking, rollerblading, nature study as well as shopping and dining in the local villages. During winter months the trail is not plowed and when snow conditions allow, is available for cross county ski and snowshoe usage. Access points are in Harriman, Monroe, Chester, and Goshen, all with convenient parking.

Please follow trail etiquette, which means moving to the right to let faster travelers pass safely. Bicyclist should warn walkers when passing and pass on the left whenever possible. It is highly recommended that proper safety equipment be worn by bicyclist and rollerbladers.

Please Note: The use of Motorized Vehicles on the Heritage Trail is strictly prohibited, including the use of Class 2 and 3 E-Bikes, Electric Scooters and Segways. If anyone witnesses Motorized Vehicle use on the trail, they are encouraged to call the OC Sheriff’s Department at 845-291-7929 to report the incident.

The use of Class 1 “pedal assist” E-Bikes is allowed, along with the use of mobility or handicap scooters.

The trail extends from the City of Middletown to the Village of Harriman.
