Grounds For Sculpture
Grounds For Sculpture (GFS) is a year-round 42-acre NJ sculpture park that invites you to unwind, explore, and connect in ever-changing, art-filled gardens. We can’t wait to see you!
Outdoors, over 300 contemporary sculptures are sited across the park, while temporary exhibitions from established & emerging artists are featured in 6 indoor galleries.
Grounds For Sculpture was founded by artist and philanthropist Seward Johnson. It opened in 1992 on the former New Jersey State Fairgrounds and was an extension of its predecessor, Johnson Atelier. Hundreds of artists studied and produced work at the Atelier. Johnson saw the potential of the place where artwork could be sited, and visitors could delight in discovering sculpture. More than 700 artists have had their work on view here.
As of May 2025, the sculpture park includes one of founder, artist and philanthropist Seward Johnson’s other great creations: Johnson Atelier and its state of the art modeling, scanning, milling, painting and finishing capabilities, along with its assets including the seven acre Meadow; the physical plant that houses the Johnson Atelier; the Motor Exhibits Building, which currently houses studios for 25 artists; and living accommodations for guest artists. Since 1974, Atelier has been an incubator for artists from across the globe to grow their practices through collaboration, and with innovative production techniques.
Grounds For Sculpture is a public not-for-profit organization governed by a Board of Trustees who oversee the successful operation of the sculpture park, arboretum, and museum. As a nonprofit public institution, Grounds For Sculpture relies on the support of visitors, art patrons, donations and grants to offer its rich programs and activities each year.
