Claddagh Rings

Claddagh Rings

A Legacy That Lives On – While the Claddagh ring’s origins date to the 1700s, its global appeal grew in the 19th and 20th centuries. Claddagh rings originated over 300 years ago in the fishing village of Claddagh near Galway. The first Claddagh ring is linked to Richard Joyce, who crafted it after returning from North Africa. He used the two clasped hands, heart and crown to represent love, loyalty, and friendship. Today, the Claddagh ring is worn by generations of Irish families and recognized worldwide.

What began as a traditional Irish wedding ring has become a symbol of Irish heritage, often passed down through families. Its design carries deep meaning and continues to resonate with wearers across Ireland and beyond.

Each Claddagh ring contains three elements:

  1. Heart – to represent love.
  2. Hands – for friendship.
  3. Crown – symbolizing loyalty.

The way a Claddagh ring is worn also holds meaning. On the right hand with the heart facing out means the wearer is single. Worn with the heart facing in, they are in a relationship. On the left hand, it often facing out indicates engagement or facing inwards means that the person is married.

The ring’s symbolism remains strong for Irish as well as non-Irish wearers are drawn to its message of lasting connection.
