    John Galliano Fall 2011 RTW

A Galliano show is usually an excuse for a fashion bacchanal, the clothes just one component of a son et lumière spectacular. Now the mighty have fallen. This outting consisted of 20 looks presented in a salon on Avenue Foch. But what better testament could there be to the genius of their creator than that there was scarcely any sense of diminishment? In fact, attendees with memories unimpaired by the poisons that have been addling Galliano’s own brain were irresistibly drawn back to his epochal March 1994 presentation in the hôtel particulier of patron Sao Schlumberger. That was a beginning, this was an end, but there was the same essence of Dietrich glamour, untrammeled imagination, beauty out of time, presented in an intimate, inescapable way. The thirties line that Galliano always loved was revisited in the rigorous tailoring he excelled at, but it was wickedly updated. The hand of Galliano the master seducer was obvious in a silk jacket in a dégradé plaid, which was belted over a slipdress. Another slipdress was worn under a latex-yoke organza coat. A clutch of the bias-cut beauties that were the designer’s original calling card were preceded by Kloss in a breathtaking full-skirted, halter-neck gown with an arrowhead motif. If it couldn’t distract from the ugliness of recent events, it also underlined the loss. Likewise, the classically draped one-shoulder closer, which was gathered at the back with pink ribbons. They were the sort of dresses you could imagine in a once entirely justifiable museum retrospective of Galliano’s work. But could such a thing even happen now? L.A.M.B. Fall 2011 Ready-to-Wear

L.A.M.B. closed out New York fashion week (only a small Finnish label followed it), and the show suggested that there was some poetic justice in that: Gwen Stefani’s collection cycled its way back through not only the trends of the season, but of past seasons, too. The show was divided into six groups, each with its own look, its own soundtrack, and its own models (often, a little oddly, grouped by race). The “Soldier Girls” wore military looks. The Rasta “Ragga Muffins,” Navajo print. Some “London Girls” had menswear-inspired suiting, and Malcolm McLaren-style “Buffalo Girls” were outfitted with outdoorsy blanket plaids. The “Mod Girls” wore leopard, stripes, and dots, and the “Glamour Girls” who closed—all Stefani-blonde—had seventies jumpsuits and halters in basic black. It’s a worthy validation of the concept that fashion should be fun to suggest, as L.A.M.B. does, that there’s no need to lock yourself into one specific look. Try boho one day, Charlie Girl the next. For any and all, L.A.M.B. is there. (by Matthew Schneier – style.com)

        D&G Spring 2011 RTW

Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana looked to the garden for inspiration. The trellis behind their runway was strewn with real roses, peonies, hydrangeas, ferns, and ivy—their florist must be ecstatic. But if the duo’s vision was Edenic, it was also poised at the moment when Eve was starting to get a little frisky. D&G is aimed at their youngest customers, so the cabbage rose-print tanks unbuttoned to reveal a hint of bra, and the mismatched bubble shorts and gingham head scarves looked sweet, but not that innocent. D&G’s teenage fans might take banishment to the woods by their evil stepmothers before they slipped into one of the designers’ red and white picnic blanket-check dresses—they were just too literal an interpretation of the theme. But other pieces would score Mom points on a spring shopping trip, especially the sky-high wedge espadrilles and the flowing boho dresses strewn with blossoms and cinched with raffia belts that closed the show. Those qualified as the freshest, prettiest takes on the long trend we’ve seen
so far this season. (by Nicole Phelps – style.com)

          Alberta Ferretti Spring 2011 Ready-to-Wear

Once upon a time, in the Edenic innocence of the pre-digital age, little girls dreamed of being beautiful princesses. Alberta Ferretti got back to the garden with her new collection of floating floral chiffons. It was a departure from the luxe lady look she’s been offering for the past few seasons, but “women want to change,” Ferretti insisted backstage.
          “Fantasy is so important.”

Here, that fantasy was cast as a vision of fairy-tale femininity. The organic, relaxed mood was sustained by the designer’s use of lace and crochet, sometimes all at once, like the lace smock with the crochet midriff. There was a hint of eccentricity in this uncompromising commitment to romance and fantasy. Though Ferretti sought balance in the more “urban” pieces—a white trench, a Bermuda shorts suit —the scales couldn’t help but tip toward those long, diaphanous gowns. And while she was quick to point out that her new designs were about “a normal woman, not a star,” it wasn’t hard to imagine the fantasy sweeping away Ferretti fans like Sarah Jessica Parker and January Jones.

            Badgley Mischka Fall 2010 Collection

Twinkling embellishments and stardust beading were a big part of the Badgley Mischka story. The reason for all the shiny finery, James Mischka revealed a few days before the show, was that he and design partner Mark Badgley (like a clutch of other designers this season) had been stargazing. Literally: They were poring over images captured by the Hubble telescope. “There’s a galaxy feeling to our beading,” Mischka remarked. Indeed, a short V-neck tank dress covered entirely with densely clustered gemstones had a river of citron running down the front and back like the Milky Way. The show opened with 15 gala looks. A fluid jersey jumpsuit in navy represented the pants portion of the program; the rest were gowns, gowns, gowns. A long-sleeve, high-neck black matte jersey dress had starry epaulets, and the bodice of a pale mauve gown cascaded with quicksilver stones. Most designers would be content to call it a day after a dozen-plus high-wattage frocks, but Badgley and Mischka took advantage of their captive audience to show a full collection from their contemporary line, Mark & James, too. Over-the-knee boots and second-skin pants in liquid mercury marked the demographic shift; skip the boots and wear the pants with one of the semi-destroyed bouclé knits for a debutante-goes-clubbing look. There were plenty of round-the-clock options in this act of the show, but it was hard to focus on the more familiar and workday pieces when the memory of so many stellar dresses was still hanging in the ether.
