Lifestyle Clothing for the Self-Preservationist

U.GLY = You Gotta Love Yourself

“The biggest thing about building character is knowing who you are and being comfortable in your own skin. At the risk of sounding cliché, you have to love yourself before anyone else can, so true love begins with yourself. ”
– Mickey Knoxx (the man behind the shirts)

u.glyIn a world where beauty is dictated by your appearance, U.GLY is bringing it back to who you are on the inside, where your Self resides, bringing Self to the front line. U.GLY brand clothing is about self-esteem, self-awareness, self-preservation and above all, love of oneself. We love this motto that they have inhabited and wanted to share some info. about who they are and what they represent.

The brand’s inspiration is drawn from life and social settings. Everyone wants to be somebody, but nobody understands that it takes self love and knowledge of self to actually be who you think you want to be.

U.GLY is more about a lifestyle and mindset than it is a clothing line. The clothing line is just the physical manifestation of the mantra, “U. Gotta Love Yourself.” U.GLY is involved with community youth groups, and also routinely donates to the Wounded Warrior Foundation. Check out their website for more information about getting involved in their self-love movement!

Green Goes Deep For Fashion In Berlin

Germany’s capital is a wellspring of fashion labels producing eco-friendly attire.

Clothes and shows alike have taken shape in the studio of eco-fashionista Magdalena Schaffrin.

A new approach to design is taking root in Berlin, and it has nothing to do with all the tech startups that have set up shop over the past few years. The city’s fashion scene–which ascended to the worldwide stage in 2007 with the launch of Berlin Fashion Week–is increasingly being defined by a growing cadre of eco-designers: more than 100 labels that use organically produced, ethically harvested, and recycled materials for their garments. Both avant-garde and green, the shift represents the convergence of multiple threads of German heritage and culture. It’s also one of the fastest-growing segments in the $3 trillion clothing industry.

As trends go, Berlin came by this one honestly. Designer and fashion-show organizer Magdalena Schaffrin attributes the city’s place at the epicenter of sustainable fashion to a myriad of factors: There are eight fashion schools in the area; Berliners harbor a decades-old appreciation for all things green; the city’s high rate of unemployment encourages entrepreneurship; rent is cheap. Those traits coalesced to facilitate a subindustry that Tanja Muehlhans, who works with the Berlin senate as a strategist for creative industries, thinks could account for 10% of annual fashion sales within 10 years.

“Sustainability is a megatrend in fashion,” says Peder Michael Pruzan-Jorgensen, a VP at BSR, a San Francisco-based firm that helps businesses create sustainable strategies. “There are few brands not considering it. That was not the case 10 years ago.” It certainly was not: According to the not-for-profit Textile Exchange, the global organic cotton market grew from $240 million in 2002 to $5.16 billion in 2010.

If Schaffrin and her peers stay their course, that figure will continue to rise. Schaffrin runs the Ethical Fashion Show and Green Showroom events during Berlin Fashion Week, giving exposure to sustainable labels from around the world. She says that buyers from the U.S. and Japan were considerably active during BFW in July, and expects as much enthusiasm for this January’s upcoming gathering. “It’s a fashion movement,” she explains, “not a fashion moment.”

This is Tribut!

Directly inspired by legendary blues guitarist Joe Bonamassa, the 1977 shirt shows what creative director Manuel Oliver calls the Tribut family emblem: a white crest surrounded by the scroll of a guitar.

Tribut (pronounced ‘trib-yoot’); a lifestyle apparel brand inspired by classic rock, blues and soul music, creates casual wear that seeks to preserve the legacy of good music, and strives to honor the incredible power of music and its affect on people’s lives. For them, it’s about connecting with people in that special place where music keeps us young in mind and heart.

Tribut’s products are uniquely American, paying homage to the roots of music performance found in America’s history. Each shirt contains an element of modernity with a classic edge: a nod to a timeless style for a more sophisticated audience. The creative mind behind the brand is visual artist, Manuel Oliver (a.k.a. Urbano). A lover of all forms of communication, kittens and punk rock, Manuel has brought his experience with mixed-media art, graphic design and screen-printing to the expansive world of casual wear.

“T-shirts are [a form of] communication – an urban language…and music is the element that influences us all.” – Artist, Manuel Oliver

The Different Types of Fashion Careers

A career in fashion is possible for anyone who wants to enter the industry, even if the person has never sewn a stitch in his or her life. While a fashion designer is the most visible profession in the industry, there are a number of other fashion jobs available for people that may not want to go down the design route.

When I started thinking about going to fashion school, I too thought about becoming a designer, but later after researching all the career paths that are in the clothing industry, I knew that merchandising was where I wanted to be. And here I am, 6 years later, living out my dream.

If you are unsure where in the fashion industry you want to belong to, check out

Rumur Stamps: Stylist. Model. Fashion Blogger.

Rumur Stamps is a great blog to read if fashion tingles your toes. It’s made up of a few components: the “moodwall” displays a daily feed of beauty and fashion inspirations, the “column” is a monthly editorial for style advice, and there’s also a cool photography portfolio to browse through. Below is an excerpt from her website in which I find interesting:

“Every day we use fashion to demonstrate our attitudes and individuality. As we begin each day, we take on a particular mindset, or get into character. We are influenced by energies in our surroundings; like our mood, habits, agenda, environment, etc. These influences manifest in every decision that we make from what we eat for breakfast, to what clothing we wear, and even what music we listen to. Most of us have multiple lifestyles; in which, not every day, or mindset is the same.

Take a moment to reflect on your own wardrobe and personal style. How does your fashion sense relate to your multiple lifestyles and personality traits? What adjectives would you use to describe your taste in clothing? Are you known for maintaining the same look? Or do you vary between several looks?

My personas persuade me to get out of bed every day… It can be a lot of fun getting into character. The more confident you become with yourself internally, the better you reverberate yourself externally.”

What are some of your style personas?

Corpse Clothing: Official Music and TV / Film Merchandise

Corpseclothing.com was launched on the Web in 2002. The site originally marketed their own range of slogan t-shirts which have always been popular, but have grown into offering official music/TV/film merchandise as well. The site now contains over 19,500 products. The business is family-run, and they work tirelessly to offer official merchandise at great prices.

So, What’s Meant By “Official Merchandise”?

Official merchandise is simply merchandise that has been endorsed by the band and an agreement has been entered into to produce and retail the product to fans. There are a growing number of sites on the Internet that offer merchandise that is not official or endorsed. These sites take money from the artist and customers end up with second rate merchandise with prints that fall off. Don’t be conned into thinking that all t-shirts are official – there’s a lot of sites out there that retail fake/unlicensed goods, so always look for the word “official” or “licensed.”

Support the artist, buy official!

After perusing around their site, I came across a pretty cool Nirvana polo shirt: (above)

Ugly Sweater Party Comin’ Your Way…

If you haven’t been to an ugly sweater party yet, listen up. They are popping out all over the place: for Christmas, new year’s, college keggers, you name it. When I first was invited to such an event, I left my shopping to the last minute thinking, I can certainly find the ugliest sweater of all, and pretty fast. What I quickly found out was that I had designer-quality taste even for the ugliest of ugly. I couldn’t find one that sang, “Look at this hot mess” enough for my liking. I started scouring all over the mall looking for where to buy an ugly sweater, with no luck of course. If I’m going ugly, then I wanted to GO UGLY. I had to wear something that I at least appreciated. After much shopping with no luck, I went home and later found a website that caters to such a niche group of fellow sweater-aficionados. buttuglysweaters.com sounds just like it is: the ugliest sweaters, all in one place online. Ahhhh, problem solved… Now you can have access to the ugly sweaters you deserve.

Help Launch Couture Circle!

Couture Circle is a new social shopping platform for women to look great and save money.

They tackle a common problem that women face when preparing to attend a special event: finding something fresh and new to wear without breaking the bank. Couture Circle aims to solve this problem by providing women with a platform to both sell dresses sitting idly in their closet and to buy dresses from other women in their community at a fraction of the retail price. Together they wish to change the way women shop and discover fashion online.

Couture Circle is close to launching this summer, but still have a few updates to the website and that’s where they need your help!

They’ve interviewed countless women about their service, and tweaked their system to be sure that they’re delivering something that women actually want. The response has been overwhelmingly positive: women want a service like this to make it easier to sell their clothes and buy new outfits at a discount. Even men love their service!

They’re on the home stretch of their launch plan and that’s why they’re turning to the community to help reach the finish line!

Thank you everyone for taking the time to look, and if you are interested in helping out, please visit Couture Circle’s indiegogo campaign here.
